TL;DR
A year ago today I started a curated content channel in Slack for our company. Was fascinated how re-visiting that channel perfectly reflected my thoughts, ideas, emotions during 2020.

In December of 2019, I was reflecting on the year and beginning to identify both the personal and professional goals I wanted to set for myself and Mountain Point for 2020.

Over the past several years, I would use my personal Slack channel as a repository for journaling, sharing and pinning content that resonated with me.  (I know there are lots of apps for this, but this is what worked for me)

My top personal goal I set, was to be more proactive in mentoring others.  My personal slack channel contained a treasure trove of advice, wisdom, tweets, podcasts, etc... so I decided this would be the perfect starting point... #Curated-Content was born.

This channel would allow me to still keep up with my habit / routine of flagging meaningful content, but now it could be slightly amplified and shared out to the rest of the Mountain Point team.

To Improve Your Team, First Work on Yourself

Summary.
If a team is not working well together, it’s highly likely that each person is contributing to the difficulty in some way. The odds of improving the team dynamic in a meaningful and sustainable will be higher if everyone — including the leader — learns to master three foundational capabilities: internal self-awareness, external self-awareness, and personal accountability

I certainly didn't foresee the Covid-19 Global Pandemic coming, but remote/flexible work was on my mind going into 2020

What PWC Learned from its Policy of Flexible Work for Everyone

“For us, flexibility is not about working less, but it is about encouraging people to work differently. It’s a two-way street. We give our people the flexibility they need when they need it, and sometimes, we need them to give more when business demands require it. When done right, flexibility results in a happier, healthier, and more productive workforce. And it helps attract the best employees, and makes them want to stick around. “

Not a big fan of New Year's Resolutions, so a refresher on "creating lasting results" was the Tony Robbins motivation I needed!

Kobe Bryant

I can't say that I was ever a huge Kobe Bryant fan since I grew up in the Michael Jordan era, but I definitely respected what he brought both on and off the court.

“The mindset isn’t about seeking a result—it’s more about the process of getting to that result. It’s about the journey and the approach. It’s a way of life. I do think that it’s important, in all endeavors, to have that mentality.” - Kobe

Pretty much all of March was Covid Craziness... adjusting both in our day to day family lives, but also being transparent with the team and helping them adjust to 100% remote.

Fortunately for us, we've always had a distributed and flexible workforce, so the adjustment was pretty easy; however, I still wanted to refresh my memory so I re-read Remote.

Building isn’t easy, or we’d already be doing all this. We need to demand more of our political leaders, of our CEOs, our entrepreneurs, our investors. We need to demand more of our culture, of our society. And we need to demand more from one another. We’re all necessary, and we can all contribute, to building.

Today marks the 1 year anniversary since starting the #curated-content Slack channel for Mountain Point.  Going back through this helped me relive our exciting year.  I feel like I've grown in so many ways as a leader and continue to feel motivated everyday because of the hardwork and growth of our team and their accomplishments.

Not only did our company make it through this year, but it was also a record year for us!

I will now be looking ahead into 2021 - how will we think bigger, accomplish more, and continue to grow personally and professionally?

Perhaps in 2021 I'll expand #curated-content beyond myself and Mountain Point and get better at leveraging Twitter and other social platforms to cast a wider net - get more feedback, connections, engagement and collaboration...
